About
Background
These are the designs of Joachim King, who is based in the heart of Glasgow.
Originally from a family of boat builders in the Finnish archipelago, there is an understanding of woodwork and carpentry in the blood.
Since moving to the UK he has obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked in the manufacturing industry.
The combined influences of engineering and boatbuilding craftsmanship are the perfect ingredients for innovative and practical design and can be seen throughout his work. His unwillingness to copy existing designs means that Joachim’s work is original and different by design. Although often unusual in appearance, his pragmatic approach maintains a balance of form with function.
Philosophy
Wherever possible, Joachim will source timber from local Scottish hardwood suppliers who manage their resources in a sustainable manner. Working in a sustainable way is important too, he has installed a rainwater collection system for use in the workshop and has insulated throughout to minimise heating energy use. Sawdust is taken to a local recycler where it is used to produce nutrient rich soil in a bio digester! Using scraps, off-cuts and reclaimed timber for many of his designs also shows a commitment to reducing waste and what can't be reused is taken home to burn on in the fire. His lighting designs all use low energy light sources, such as LEDs and compact flourescents, and when working on larger projects he encourages customers to use them also.
