Background
These are the designs of Joachim King, who is now based in Glasgow’s west end.
Originally from a family of boat builders in the Finnish archipelago, there is an understanding of woodwork and carpentry in the blood.
Since moving to the UK he has obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked in the manufacturing industry.
The combined influences of engineering and boatbuilding craftsmanship are the perfect ingredients for innovative and practical design and can be seen throughout his work.
Philosophy
Wherever possible, Joachim will source timber from local Scottish hardwood suppliers who manage their resources in a sustainable manner.
Using scraps, off-cuts and reclaimed timber for many of his designs also shows a commitment to reducing waste. His unwillingness to copy or imitate existing designs means that Joachim’s work is original and different by design. Although often unusual in appearance, his practical approach maintains a balance of form with function.
